If you're like me, summer is my absolute favorite time of the year. There are many endless things to do: shopping, surfing, basking in the Florida sun, and of course...adding bright flare and color to your favorite space.
That's why I'm here to give you a few tips to brighten your space and give it that "beach-chic" look. So without further ado, let's get started.
How to achieve that "beach-chic" look.
Before jumping in the car with impulse to buy every bright blue and orange pillow you can find in the isle...let's look at the different ways you can achieve this style with perfect balance.
First things first, we've got to establish the type of "beach chic" look you're aiming for. So, I've listed a few different styles that you might like.
1. Modern Beach-Chic
Here's an example of what we'd call a "modern beach chic" style. This design combines modern with all things "beachy." If you're the type of person that isn't all into crazy combinations of color with added sophistication, this is your style.
How to get the look:
To put it simply, this style is achieved by combining modern and "new traditional" with a gentle pop of color.
Out of all the popular tropical colors, choose two colors you want to blend together. (*Hint: Pick two opposite colors, it is best to blend colors that contrast each other).
Bring those two colors within the space. You can have the freedom to incorporate these two colors any way you choose. Here's a pro tip: Make sure you don't over-do it. If your favorite of two colors is blue, bring that color in more than you would for the orange. For example: Opting for a blue couch and throwing some orange pillows on the opposite side of the room will help create that bright blend of contrast.
Replace your old rectangular coffee table for a "drum" coffee table. These coffee tables have become a popular trend, especially more recently. It is a perfect touch to open up the room and create that tropical, modern feel.
Don't forget to add some tropical greenery! Simply placing a single vase of artificial tropical leaves on the coffee table or mantle will do wonders in making it more relaxed and airy. Even adding a tropical floor plant next to your sofa would help define your open room.
Keep all your walls white. Trust me. This will help create an area of sophistication, make your space feel more open and bright.
2. Mid-Century Beach-Chic
This is for the adventurous, daring types. You've got impeccable, iconic style...but you also love the tropical, relaxed beach life.
How to get the look:
Mid-century modern is the popular style of the century. This was originally derived from the 1970s, when everyone wanted to ditch the norm and traditions and opt for something new and basic. At the same time, it was the perfect opportunity to get more bold with colors and patterns.
But, we want to combine this trend with a little bit of "beach-chic" glam.
If you haven't yet, add some mid-century modern chairs that have the "light" and "skinny" feel to them. Pick ones that have tapered legs.
Always use wood and warm finishes.
Combine geometric patterns that you'd typically use for mid-century modern, and add some alternative patterns (i.e. such as pillows with palm leaves or other abstract shapes that bring a more soft feel).
Adding several pops of bold colors. In this case, I'd suggest you combine no more than three of your favorite pops of tropical colors. Whatever color suits you best, incorporate that the most in your space...let every other color surround it.
Artwork, artwork, artwork....this is probably one of the most important step to achieve the mid-century modern and beach-chic look. Find unique, bright abstract artwork pieces that contain the colors you've picked to work with your palette for the space. Spread them around the home. It will give it a whole new look.
3. Boho Beach-Chic
This is for those who don't live by the rules. You're simply too creative to live inside the lines,, you're to involved in adding layers of texture, colors and patterns that reflect your love for the tropics. This style is perfect for those who love creativity and usually love the easy-flowing, casual lifestyle.
How to get the look:
Okay, I have a confession to make...this is my absolute favorite style to go with for beach-chic. Why? Because there are no rules, only room for creativity! After all, boho is the style that derived from the gypsy culture. Not only that, but this design began as a movemwnt against the current culture back in the 19th century.
This style is focused on effortless relaxed fashion with loose, casual and overall artistic, creative mishmash of elements. This is for those who know how to layer and create.
Let's see how we can combine this style with a beachy-feel.
Get yourself some worn rugs and upholstery. With how popular this design is, it is simple to find worn-style rugs with intricate global patterns.
Add tropical plants...everywhere. Afterall, as far as you're concerned, your living on an island in a faraway land from nowhere.
Add framed prints of tropical plants and abstract tropical artwork.
Go with white or neutral upholstery if possible. If you're thinking of adding several layers of patterns and colors, it'd be best to pick a neutral base to work your magic.
Add some unique, patterned throws and pillows.
Always layer and add texture. This style is all about layers.
If you love longboarding or surfing...now's the time to use it as your décor centerpiece to tie in the room.
Which of these styles would you pick for your space?
I would love to hear your thoughts about any of these "beach-chic" styles. The best part...you can keep it all year round if you'd like. These styles have become completely timeless in style and feel.
Which of these styles speak you?
